Daily Inspiration: Meet Jose Contreras

Jose Contreras has spent nearly two decades building a practice that takes him across borders, studios, and artistic disciplines. What began as a curiosity for drawing and body modification in Caracas, Venezuela became one of the most respected careers in contemporary realism tattooing.
In this interview with Voyage Austin, Jose reflects on what it took to leave Venezuela at 20 and start over in Buenos Aires — building a clientele from scratch, adapting to a new culture, and doing it again when he moved to Lyon, then London, then New York. Each city added something. Each studio taught him something different about the craft and about himself.
His time at Last Rites Tattoo in New York City marked a turning point — working alongside world-renowned artists for nearly three years, competing at conventions across the country, and earning multiple awards that cemented his reputation internationally.
Texas came next, and it stuck. The Dallas Tattoo Expo brought him to the state, and the energy of the people and the pace of life made him want to stay. He eventually opened his own private studio in Lewisville before finding his home in Austin — a city he describes as the perfect backdrop for this next chapter.
Jose talks openly about what drives him: the clients getting their first tattoo who never thought they'd sit in a chair, the memorial pieces that carry more weight than any award, and the surreal experience of tattooing artists he once watched on television growing up in Venezuela.
A candid and personal look at one of the most respected realist artists working today — and the journey that brought him here.
